The Epistemology of Al-Falah from Islamic and Western Perspectives

Epistemology of Al-Falah from the Islamic Perspective

Al-Falah is viewed comprehensively in all aspects of life, as stated in the Qur'an and Hadith. According to Al-Attas, Al-Falah refers to a spiritual experience grounded in faith towards the universe and life, which reflects good morals and proper conduct (adab). From this understanding, Al-Falah means happiness, success, excellence, prosperity, and well-being experienced by an individual—both outwardly and inwardly—in this world and the Hereafter. There is no specific measure to quantify the level of happiness, as it is rooted in personal conviction within the individual.

Epistemology of Al-Falah from the Western Perspective

In English, Al-Falah has many synonyms. It refers to welfare, well-being, or in statistical terms, human development. Al-Falah or welfare, according to modern psychologists, is a set of rules or guidelines that describe the happiness of a society, which serves as a criterion for a nation's success and stability. This well-being is associated with an underlying state of happiness, as opposed to fluctuating feelings of joy or pleasure, and is referred to as a "sense of satisfaction with one's life, both generally and in specific areas such as relationships, health, and employment."

Seal and Bruzy argue that welfare is a state of well-being for society. Social welfare encompasses health, economic conditions, happiness, and the quality of life of the people. The conditions for social well-being are based on a compromise between three elements: the extent to which social problems are controlled, the extent to which needs are met, and the extent to which opportunities for improving living standards are provided.

The Connection Between the Term Al-Falah and Surah al-Mu’minun (23:1–11)

Indeed, successful are the believers.
That is, those who humble themselves in their prayers.
And those who avoid vain and idle talk.
And those who strive to purify their wealth (by giving zakat).
And those who guard their chastity.
Except with their wives or those whom their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not blameworthy.
But whoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors.
And those who are faithful to their trusts and promises.
And those who carefully maintain their prayers.
They are the ones who will inherit,
Who will inherit Paradise Al-Firdaus; they will abide therein forever.

Conclusion

Surah al-Mu’minun serves as the foundation, direction, mission, vision, and the most important guide to success in human life in this world and the Hereafter. It explains in detail the tips, achievements, and efforts that must be undertaken by humans. Without actions and organized efforts as outlined in this Surah, it is quite difficult to attain true success. The specialness of the believers is shown through the good address by Allah in this Surah and the encouragement to strive diligently to experience the true pleasure of Paradise without neglecting success in this world. Believers and wise people will make every effort to achieve both success in this world and the Hereafter and will not waste the time they have. The recipe for success as stated in this Surah — performing prayers with humility as taught by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), paying zakat, guarding personal dignity, avoiding transgression, maintaining trusts and integrity, and fulfilling promises — will surely be rewarded with the inheritance of Paradise Al-Firdaus in the Hereafter.
