Biography

Professor Dr. Mohamad Fazli Sabri was born in Lenggong, Perak. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Human Development from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in 1999 and a Master of Science in Consumer Science from the same institution in 2002. In 2011, he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Human Development and Family Studies, specializing in Family Finance, from Iowa State University, USA.

He began his academic career at Universiti Putra Malaysia as a Tutor in 2000, progressing steadily through the academic ranks — serving as Senior Lecturer (2003–2015), Associate Professor (2015–May 2020), and currently as Professor at the Faculty of Human Ecology, specializing in Personal Financial Planning. Beyond teaching, he has held key administrative positions, including Head of Department, Deputy Dean, and Dean of the Faculty of Human Ecology.

Professor Mohamad Fazli has supervised numerous postgraduate students, chairing 19 Ph.D. and 14 Master’s candidates. His professional credentials reinforce his authority in financial planning — he is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) accredited by the Financial Planning Association of Malaysia (2014) and a Shariah Registered Financial Planner (2015) certified by the Malaysian Financial Planning Council (MFPC). Additionally, he holds the HRDF-Certified Trainer (PSMB) qualification and the Malaysian Skills Certificate in Financial Planning (Levels 3–5), reflecting his strong technical and vocational expertise.

His research portfolio focuses on financial literacy, consumer well-being, and household economics, with an emphasis on real-world impact. His work spans financial literacy, fintech adoption, financial vulnerability, and effective debt management. Over the years, he has secured numerous research grants — serving as Principal Investigator for 36 projects — including major grants from the Capital Market Development Fund, the Long-Term Research Grant Scheme (Malaysia Research University Network), and international collaborations funded by the Asian Association for Consumer Interests and Marketing (AACIM).

In applied research, he has led 18 major consultancy projects on customer satisfaction and program impact assessment for prominent organizations such as Bank Negara Malaysia, Tenaga Cable Industries Sdn. Bhd., Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK), and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs. These engagements highlight his ability to bridge academic research with policy and industry practice.

Professor Mohamad Fazli’s academic influence is further evidenced by his citation metrics: Scopus H-Index 23, Web of Science H-Index 16, and Google Scholar H-Index 39. He has published over 134 articles in Scopus and WoS-indexed journals and 97 papers in other refereed journals, alongside several books and book chapters with local and international publishers.

At the national level, he has been entrusted with numerous high-impact appointments, reflecting his leadership in governance, education, youth development, and Islamic scholarship. He serves as a Panel Expert for the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, a Board Member of the Advisory Council of Institut Latihan Islam Malaysia (ILIM) under JAKIM, and a Council Member for the Deans of Islamic Studies in Academia. He also contributes as a Curriculum Committee Member for Early Childhood Education under the Ministry of Education, Malaysia, and as a Think Tank Member for the Institute for Youth Research (IYRES) and the Institute of Darul Ridzuan. Furthermore, he serves on the Executive Committee for the National Dakwah Council’s Intellectual Discourse Series, reflecting his commitment to national policy innovation and institutional reform.

Within the financial planning and education sectors, he plays an influential role as a Fellow Member of MFPC, serving as Vice President for Research and Publication (2019–2025) and Editor-in-Chief for both the Journal of Wealth Management and Financial Planning and Financial First Magazine. His appointment as Deputy Chairman of the Ethics and Compliance Board (2024–2025) underscores his dedication to professional integrity. Internationally, he contributes as a Committee Member of the UNESCO Entrepreneurship Education Network (EE Net) Malaysia (2024–2027) and as a Subject Matter Expert in Financial Literacy for Spark Capital Development Berhad (2024–2026).

He has been a keynote and featured speaker at numerous international conferences in Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines, and has presented his research at prestigious platforms in Japan, South Korea, Türkiye, Bangladesh, India, and China — often supported by the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) and Child and Youth Finance International (CYFI).

At the global level, he holds several distinguished positions: Vice President of the Asian Association for Consumer Interests and Marketing (AACIM), Board Member of the International Academy of Financial Consumers (IAFICO), Board Member of the ASEAN Lecturers’ Community, and Advisory Council Member at the Centre for Organization Leadership and Development. He also serves on the Academic Advisory Board of dacadoo AG, Zurich, and as Country President for the Scholars Academic and Scientific Society. In academia, he is a Visiting Professor at the Nottingham University Business School, UK, the Social and Management Institute (STIAMI), Indonesia, and an Adjunct Professor at both IPB University (2022–2027) and Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia.

Professor Mohamad Fazli’s professional involvement extends to international associations such as the International Federation for Home Economics, Asia-Pacific Risk and Insurance Association (APRIA), International Society for Development and Sustainability, and the American Association of International Researchers, reflecting his broad interdisciplinary engagement.

He has received 39 awards22 international and 17 national — recognizing his excellence in education, research, and community service. Among his most notable accolades are the WIPO Medal for Creativity, Invention for Children Order of Merit, Special Award for Best Innovation by the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), and the Gold Medal at the Anugerah Harta Intelek Negara 2015. His commercialized innovation, Smart Money Kit: Bright Kids Smart Money — protected by eight copyrights and two trademarks — has been widely acclaimed at innovation platforms such as ITEX and the Malaysian Technology Expo (MTE).

In recognition of his scholarly excellence, he received the UPM Vice Chancellor’s Fellowship Award (Best Researcher in Social Sciences) in 2022.

Beyond academia, he has spearheaded impactful financial literacy programs such as Program Bijak Wang, in collaboration with the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, PTPTN, and Lembaga Zakat Selangor. He frequently conducts nationwide workshops with organizations including MFPC, FELDA, MAKPEM, Spark Capital Development Berhad, and Wilra Sdn. Bhd., as well as serving as a sought-after speaker for Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad, TEKUN Nasional, INTAN, EPF (KWSP), CUEPACS, Sun Life Malaysia Takaful Berhad, and others.

A respected media personality, Professor Mohamad Fazli has made 493 media appearances, including as columnist, writer, and expert commentator on Radio IKIM, Bernama Radio, KLfm, Manis FM, Negeri FM, Buletin FM, and Terengganu FM, as well as national newspapers such as Berita Harian, The Star, Utusan Malaysia, Kosmo!, and Sinar Harian. He has also appeared on TV3’s Buletin Utama, Malaysia Hari Ini, Astro Awani, and RTM’s Selamat Pagi Malaysia. In recognition of his sustained public engagement, he received the UPM Media Visibility Award (2023–2024).
