Child Development Laboratory (MPK)

HISTORY The Child Development Laboratory (MPK), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), was established in 1975 with the provision of early childhood education services for six-year-old children through kindergarten classes under the Department of Home Technology, Faculty of Agriculture. Subsequently, MPK was placed under the Department of Human Development and Family Studies (JPMPK), Faculty of Human Ecology. MPK comprises UPM Kindergarten, established in 1975, and the Child Care Laboratory (MTA), established in 1984. In 1996, both laboratories were merged to form the Child Development Laboratory (MPK), taking into consideration their functions in supporting teaching and learning (T&L) activities as well as research in the field of child development holistically. In line with these developments, MPK has expanded its early childhood education programmes to include children aged 3 months to 4 years through the Child Care Centre (Taska) and children aged 5 to 6 years through the Kindergarten (Tadika). PURPOSE OF ESTABLISHMENT To provide laboratory facilities that enable lecturers and students to conduct practical activities and research in the field of child development. CHILD DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY 10 laboratories 122 children The placement of children in the laboratories is guided by the Guidelines for the Establishment of Kindergartens and Child Care Centres (Circular of the Chief Secretary, Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government, No. 7, 2017), the Child Care Centre Act 1984, and the Education Act 1996 (Preschool Education). LABORATORIES & STUDENTS All laboratories (classes) at MPK serve as teaching and learning laboratories involving 16 courses for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, comprising: 5 courses under the Bachelor of Human Development Science with Honours, Faculty of Human Ecology; 3 courses under the Bachelor of Nutrition and Community Health Science with Honours, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM; and 8 courses under postgraduate programmes, Faculty of Human Ecology.
