Serdang - 16 May 2019, The Department of Music launches its Music Outreach Program earlier this year, the program is to provide apposite music programs to the community to enhancement of musical skills by the experts in the department.

The program inaugurated with the collaborative singers-pianists workshop conducted by FEM Music Department voice lecturer Mdm. Ang Mei Foong, a well-known soprano soloist who had collaborated with many established musicians locally and worldwide, and the department’s alumni, Mr. Bernard Tan, who is now a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) candidate at the Michigan University. The workshop on the topic The Art of Playing for Singing was successfully conducted on 16 May 2019. The objectives of this workshop are to introduce the significance of a pianist’s role in a voice collaboration, to raise awareness on the importance of the pianist-singer collaboration in a practical performance, as well as to train the singers and pianists the skills and interpretations of songs performance.

The workshop started with a talk on the methods of collaborative piano playing, the techniques, and the differences between being a concert pianist versus a collaborative pianist. Then it moved on to music coaching, where five pairs of singer-pianist duos had participated. The duos came from our own UPM music student, as well as the students/ alumni from University Malaya, UCSI University, La Voce Choir, and Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

The workshop was successfully conducted in a friendly and fun way, participants and observers spent wonderful time together exploring the art of playing for singing.
