The 12th UPM International Colloquium for Music Research (ICMus19) Concluded with a Success

5 December 2019: The 12th UPM International Colloquium for Music Research (ICMus19) was successfully held on 31 October – 2 November at TNCPI Office Building, Universiti Putra Malaysia. It was organised by the Department of Music with the support of the Faculty of Human Ecology (FEM).

This academic event was officiated by Prof. Ahmad Hariza Hashim, the Dean of FEM, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Loo Fung Chiat, the Head of Music Department, and Dr. Chow Ow Wei, the Chair of ICMus19. With two invited keynote speakers, i.e. Prof. Dr. Yu Hui from Yunnan University, China and Eddin Khoo from Pusaka, Malaysia, ICMus19 has attracted an array of scholars, researchers and participants from local and abroad, notably from UPM, UM, UiTM, TAR UC as well as international delegates from China, Thailand, Indonesia, Ireland, U.K. and U.S.A. It is also our honour to mention that Prof. Yu, our keynote guest from China, is recently awarded the Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor of Ministry of Education in the People’s Republic of China.

Having a history of two decades, the UPM International Colloquium for Music Research was revitalised after a hiatus. This year, our scholarly discussion centred on the theme of Music and the Cosmos, with an inspiration of the Greek word cosmos that denotes the encompassment of all matter to associate with how music can be explored and discussed in the sub-themes of world-system sound organisation, cosmopolitanism, digital age music, or in any new research topic. A total of 35 paper presentations that include 3 panel discussions and 1 workshop was delivered, alongside with 7 other music activities that ran within the full daily programme from 08:30 till 21:30 in this three-day colloquium.

This was the first time in the organisational history of the Music Department to render collaborative effort between departments and Bachelor programmes within FEM. The organisation committee comprised 22 academic and non-academic staff from Department of Music (JM), Department of Human Development and Family Studies (JPMPK), Department of Social and Development Sciences (JSKP), Department of Resource Management and Consumer Studies (JPSPP), as well as the faculty administration team. Furthermore, 28 undergraduate students, notably from the programmes of Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Human Development Science with Information Technology and Bachelor of Art (Foreign Language), had voluntarily participated in the ICMus19 Volunteer Programme.

The organisation of ICMus19 was inspired with an idea to keep the conference pricing lower and to avoid extravagant settings, while striving to build up academic intellectuality by drawing dedicated scholars in the music fields to debates on current issues in related research topics. Apart from implementing careful procedures, especially in the abstract steering, we also delivered enriched, musical contents in the ICMus19 programme, thanks to the funding support from the Faculty of Human Ecology and our main sponsor, the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). With a remarkable organising team and an aspiration for a serviceable spirit to provide task-based solutions and people-oriented supports, we are obliged on hearing positive and encouraging comments from participants of ICMus19 after the event.

Lastly, we hope the aspiration to organise a genuine international conference like this will continue in future, while the collaborative ties within FEM will grow stronger and further.
