Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak Initiative
The idea to set up the chair came from the 10th Chairman of Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS), Y.Bhg. Dato Ir. Alice Jawan Empaling, and her newly-elected committee members for the 2017-2019 term. The setting up of the chair was proposed to achieve a number of goals, namely: (1) to honor long-time and 9th Chairman of SIDS, Tan Sri Dato Sri Empiang Jabu who has contributed to the non-governmental organization in term of her leadership and also her numerous contributions to public life, e.g. as Women leader of PBB, first Dayak Woman Senator and various roles in other organizations; (2) to, in the words of the 10th SIDS Chairman “… empower Dayak women and bring them to the next level of participation in state and national governance…”; (3) to collaborate and network with universities and agencies to achieve the above objectives.
On 29 August 2018 during the courtesy call upon YAB Datuk Patinggi (Dr.) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg by the newly-elected committee members of SIDS led by its 10th Chairman, Y.Bhg. Dato Ir. Alice Jawan Empaling, the idea of setting up the chair was put forward to the Chief Minister who was very receptive. That led to a suggestion that SIDS should seek out UPM’s help in how to go about setting up the chair, and that the former wanted to see details concerning the proposed chair, especially the expected outcomes.

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) hosted an initial visit from SIDS Chairman on 7 September 2018. The meeting was attended by UPM representatives as follows:
The meeting was attended by representatives from the Faculty of Human Ecology that was tasked with the mission to assist SIDS in materialising the chair and to be the anchor faculty when the chair comes through and hosted at UPM.
UPM and the Faculty was informed in early 2019, that YAB Chief Minister and Sarawak Government had agreed in principle to fund the chair. As a result, a second meeting between UPM and SIDS was held on 10 May 2019. The second meeting was to sort out administrative matters before the official launching of the chair.
