UNIVERSITI PUTRA MALAYSIA has appointed YBhg. Prof. Dr. Jayum Anak Jawan, 61, as inaugural chairholder of Tan Sri Empiang Jabu Research Chair in Dayak Women Studies. The appointment take effect from 1 November 2019 for a period of three years.
Jayum received his early education from Nanga Assan Government Primary School, Sibu and attended several other schools such as Methodist and Ling Chu Ming, Sibu and St. Thomas, Kuching before pursuing his undergraduate in the United States in 1978. He received his BA in Politics & Economic from the University of North Carolina at Asheville, NC in 1980, MA in International Relations from Appalachian State University, Boone, NC, in 1982 and PhD in Southeast Asian Studies from University of Hull, UK in 1992. He joined UPM in 1982, retired in October 2018 and since December of the same year was on a two years post-retirement contract until his appointment to this chair.
He brings 37 years of teaching and research experiences to the chair. He has held various short-term academic appointments including the most recent as dual appointees as Tun Abdul Razak Chair at the Centre for International Studies and Visiting Professor of Political Science at the Department of Political Science, Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, USA between 2015 and 2017.
